House Slabs

The house slab is the one part of a new home that cannot be fixed cheaply later, which is why it is the part we treat with the most discipline. High Calibre Concrete Construction builds house slabs for owner builders, builders and developers across South East Queensland, working directly from the engineered slab design and the site classification for your block.

BUILT TO AS 2870. Residential slabs in Australia are designed under AS 2870 based on the soil reactivity of the site, from stable A and S class sites through to highly reactive H class clay sites common in parts of SE QLD. We construct waffle pod and raft slab systems to the engineer’s specification, including edge beams, internal beams, membrane, reinforcement placement and cover, and we coordinate plumbing and electrical penetrations with your other trades before the pour.

WHAT YOU GET

Accurate set out to the building plans, correctly lapped and supported steel, concrete of the specified strength placed and compacted properly, a level finish suited to the floor covering, and cure time respected before load goes on. We photograph reinforcement and key stages before the pour so you and your certifier have a record of what is inside the slab.

WHO WE WORK WITH

We pour slabs for new homes, extensions, granny flats and secondary dwellings. As a QBCC licensed contractor we work under your builder or directly with you as an owner builder, and we are comfortable coordinating with certifiers and engineers throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions

A raft slab has beams trenched into the ground so the slab sits partly within the soil, while a waffle slab sits on the surface on a grid of void formers with beams between them. The engineer selects the system based on your soil classification, the fall of the block and drainage. We build both to specification.

Yes, always. A house slab must be built to the engineered design produced for your specific site classification. We work from those drawings, raise anything that looks inconsistent before the pour, and coordinate with the engineer or certifier where an inspection of the steel is required.

Yes. Secondary dwellings, extensions and granny flat slabs follow the same engineering and licensing requirements as a full house slab, just at smaller scale. Access is often the main consideration on established blocks, and we regularly use concrete pumps where truck access is limited.
